Celebration of Giving
GRE students, staff and PTO are sponsoring the 2011 Celebration of Giving during the month of December.  We will be raising money during this holiday season for aNationwide Children's Hospital Cancer Research Fund.  The GRE student leadership team selected this charity because they felt it was important to support the research for childhood cancer.
Students are asked to do extra chores around their homes to earn money to donate to this charity. Students can start bringing in their donations on Tuesday, December 6th.  Parents and friends may also want to make a donation to this worthy cause.
We are asking parents to take a picture of their child doing the chores and email it tocoon_laurie@dublinschools.netno later than Monday, December 19th.  The photos will be part of a slide show presentation at the Celebration of Giving Assembly on December 21st.  This is a wonderful opportunity to show our students the happiness and joy that comes from giving!

Community Update: Pertussis
The early symptoms of pertussis for all age groups include sneezing, runny nose, mild cough and low-grade fever.  Within two weeks a severe cough develops with coughing spells that usually are more frequent at night. Infants with pertussis will make a “whooping” sound when they take in a deep breath to cough, but school-age children, teenagers and adults typically will not have this characteristic “whoop”. Coughing can last for up to two months.

Pertussis is spread through respiratory droplets of infected individuals when they cough, sneeze or talk. People who share a confined space or have face-to-face contact with an infected person are most at risk of developing the illness within 7-10 days after exposure. Left untreated, infected individuals can spread the illness from the time symptoms first appear until three weeks after the coughing begins, however once appropriate antibiotics are given for five days, a person is no longer considered contagious. Infected students will be excluded from school until they have received five full days of therapy.

One way to prevent the occurrence of pertussis is to get vaccinated against the disease.  Most children receive 5 DTP vaccines before entering school. Unfortunately the protection afforded by the vaccine seems to fade, which is why cases occur in elementary children. This is the reason a booster pertussis vaccine is now required for all students entering 7th grade. This vaccine is also recommended for children age 11 an older to adults up to age 64.

Parents are urged to contact their doctor, their child’s health care provider or the county health department for more information on pertussis and vaccine prevention.
